Registered Nurse – Pre-operative

SUMMARY and PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Pre-operative Registered Nurse is accountable for the provision of nursing care within the assigned pre-operative areas of the surgery center.  Ensure patient needs are met in accordance with instructions of physician and facility administrative procedures. Participates in various quality activities as appropriate and as directed by the Director of Nursing, Medical Director and/or the Quality Committee(s). 

SCOPE OF POSITION: The Pre-operative Registered Nurse reports directly to the Director of Nursing. Although this position is specific to the pre-operative area, cross-training to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) is strongly encouraged.

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Quality / Safety / Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensures efficient and effective pre-operative nursing care is provided to all patients.
  • Provides assistance to ensure the confidentiality, security and integrity of information in the Medical Record is maintained.
  • Participates in the quality improvement process.
  • Maintains compliance with all Board approved, facility policies and procedures. 

Daily Operations

  • Participates as a team member in support of the total peri-operative process.
  • Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies, and personnel.
  • Uses equipment effectively by anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate care.
  • Confirms that proper techniques and procedures are used according to accepted Standards of Nursing Practice and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Assists with the ordering, receiving, and storage of supplies.
  • Maintains order and cleanliness of the pre-operative area.
  • Greets patient on arrival in the pre-operative area and informs the patient/family about all routine care and procedures related to the pre-operative experience.
  • Explains consents for surgery, patient’s rights and responsibilities, and pre-operative/post-operative instructions.
  • Completes the identification process and initiates nursing documentation in the patient’s medical record.
  • Assures belongings are properly labeled and placed under patient stretcher.
  • Performs pre-operative assessment as required per policy and procedure including but not limited to: allergies, last intake of food or drink, and documents responses.
  • Verifies operative consent for correct procedure, doctor's name, patient's signature, and date and time, and obtains all necessary signatures.
  • Verifies chart has completed history and physical.
  • Performs vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, 02 saturation) and documents in the medical record.
  • Reviews and verifies completion of pre-operative checklist.
  • Verifies chart for appropriate laboratory work and notifies physician (anesthesiologist/attending surgeon) of any abnormal value, and documents in the patient’s medical record.
  • Verifies physician's orders and performs procedures as ordered.
  • Demonstrates ability to assist anesthesia providers during the administration of various regional blocks.
  • Maintains compliance with facility time-out protocol during regional blocks in the pre-operative area.
  • Administers appropriate medications such as antibiotics and pre-medications per physician's orders.
  • Prepares pre-op cubicle as designated by procedure and documents pre-operative care according to policy and procedure.
  • Communicates with anesthesia provider(s), Operating Room personnel, and/or physician(s) about any problems which arise.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment and safety concerns to the Director of Nursing/designee.
  • Adheres to safety policies and procedures; i.e. disposal of sharps.
  • Reports observed or suspected safety violations, hazards and policy and procedure noncompliance to appropriate organization personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing or designee. 

Customer and Employee Satisfaction

  • Promotes positive and effective working relationships among Center staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for patient, physician and staff satisfaction as it pertains to the clinical areas.
  • Responds appropriately to physician, patient and visitor complaints and communicates this information to the Director of Nursing in a timely manner. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Education, Credentials, Licensure: 

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • High School graduate or GED certificate recipient 

REQUIRED LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio
  • Current BCLS and ACLS certification 

Specialized knowledge: 

Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Additional languages preferred. Proficient in the use of computers; ability to multitask, problem solve, meet deadlines, adapt to changing priorities and situations and demonstrate excellent organizational skills.   

Knowledge of state-specific and federal healthcare regulations and standards as these pertain to the clinical areas within an Ambulatory Surgery Center. 

Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Must be detail oriented and organized. High integrity, including maintenance of confidential information. Must be able to exercise good judgement and positively influence others, including handling confrontations with poise and efficiency. 

Type and Length of Experience: 

  • Previous work experience in a pre-operative area within an ambulatory surgery setting, acute hospital surgical department of no less than one (1) year.
  • Previous work experience in a post-anesthesia recovery room is preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close distance (e.g., working on a computer for prolonged periods of time).
