Registered Nurse – Recovery Room (PACU)

SUMMARY and PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Recovery Room Registered Nurse is accountable for the provision of nursing care in the assigned post-operative areas of the surgery center.  Ensure patient needs are met in accordance with instructions of physician and facility administrative procedures.  Participates in various quality activities as appropriate and as directed by the Director of Nursing, Medical Director and/or the Quality Committee(s). Provides nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administered, monitoring patient and informing surgeon and/or anesthesia provider of observed complications. 

SCOPE OF POSITION: The Recovery Room Registered Nurse reports directly to the Director of Nursing. Although this position is specific to the post-anesthesia care area, cross-training to the pre-operative area is strongly encouraged.

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 Quality / Safety / Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensures efficient and effective post-operative nursing care is provided to all patients.
  • Provides assistance to ensure the confidentiality, security and integrity of information in the Medical Record is maintained.
  • Participates in the quality improvement process.
  • Maintains compliance with all Board approved, facility policies and procedures. 

Daily Operations

  • Participates as a team member in support of the total peri-operative process.
  • Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies and personnel.
  • Uses equipment effectively by anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate care.
  • Confirms that proper techniques and procedures are used according to accepted Standards of Nursing Practice and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Assists with the ordering, receiving, and storage of supplies.
  • Maintains order and cleanliness of the post-operative area.
  • Performs safe and individualized nursing care for the patient in the immediate post-operative/post-anesthesia period.
  • Assesses and documents the patient’s physical and emotional status upon arrival in the recovery room.
  • Documents post-anesthesia care and identity of second person in the recovery room during the patient’s recovery from anesthesia/sedation according to approved policies and procedures.
  • Provides nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administered.
  • Monitors patients and informs surgeon and/or anesthesia provider of observed complications.
  • Performs thorough post-operative patient assessment prior to discharge of the patient.
  • Assists in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient in preparation for discharge.
  • Develops a plan of care for the patient based on the assessment data.
  • Reviews post-operative instructions, prescriptions from the surgeon and durable medical equipment (as applicable) with the patient and responsible adult and documents corresponding information in the patient’s medical record.
  • Informs patient and family about appropriate care and procedure to follow upon returning home.
  • Determines that patient and significant other understand conditions that require immediate care and methods to obtain those.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Nursing or designee. 

Customer and Employee Satisfaction

  • Promotes positive and effective working relationships among Center staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for patient, physician and staff satisfaction as it pertains to the clinical areas.
  • Responds appropriately to physician, patient and visitor complaints and communicates this information to the Director of Nursing in a timely manner. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Education, Credentials, Licensure: 

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • High School graduate or GED certificate recipient 

REQUIRED LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio
  • Current BCLS, ACLS and PALS certification 

Specialized knowledge: 

Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Additional languages preferred. Proficient in the use of computers; ability to multitask, problem solve, meet deadlines, adapt to changing priorities and situations and demonstrate excellent organizational skills.  

Knowledge of state-specific and federal healthcare regulations and standards as these pertain to the clinical areas within an Ambulatory Surgery Center. 

Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Must be detail oriented and organized. High integrity, including maintenance of confidential information. Must be able to exercise good judgement and positively influence others, including handling confrontations with poise and efficiency. 

Type and Length of Experience: 

  • Previous work experience in a post-anesthesia care unit within an ambulatory surgery setting, acute hospital surgical department of no less than one (1) year.
  • Previous work experience in a pre-operative area is preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close distance (e.g., working on a computer for prolonged periods of time).
