Surgical Technologist - Ambulatory Surgery Center

Grove City Surgery Center (GCSC), a multi-specialty surgery center in Grove City, OH, will open in the Fall 2017.  GCSC is seeking experienced Surgical Technologists to join their team.  The Center consists of 5 ORs and 2 procedure rooms, with a strong service line in orthopedics.  Other services include general surgery, urology, gynecology, plastic, pain management and GI endoscopy.

Position Summary:

GCSC surgical technologists provide assistance to the surgical team during the intraoperative phase of the patient’s surgical experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides aseptic, safe, appropriately equipped, and functional surgical environment.
  • Functions as first or second scrub for all surgical procedures within service line.
  • Accountable for proper surgical instrument preparation, function, storage, and repair.
  • Reviews preference cards and case carts for completeness. Ensures all materials, instruments, equipment, and special orders are available for the procedure.
  • Assists with opening of sterile supplies when requested by circulating nurse and expedites room turnover by assisting OR support staff.
  • Demonstrates compliance with the hospital surgical counts policy and an understanding of the principles of and the techniques for surgical counts.
  • Organizes back table setup, anticipates surgeon’s needs, and hands appropriate instruments during procedures.
  • Maintains sterile field. Demonstrates strict adherence to aseptic technique and in-depth knowledge of principles and practices associated with attire, surgical hand scrub, gowning and gloving, draping, aseptic practice, sanitation, and standard precautions.
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge of medication error prevention.
  • Demonstrates safe and accurate care and handling of surgical specimens.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of methods of hemostasis, and knowledge of electrosurgical and tourniquet equipment use and appropriate safety precautions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of workplace hazards and basic patient and staff safety requirements for the perioperative setting.
  • Demonstrates effective instrument and equipment pre-cleaning throughout the course of the procedure as much as possible, accounts for all instrumentation at the point of use, and appropriately prepares instruments and equipment for safe transport to the decontamination area.
  • Assists with maintenance of preference cards for assigned service line.
  • Takes prompt action to identify and remove faulty equipment from use.
  • Assures that instruments are prepared post-procedurally and returned to SPD in the manner in which they were received in order to expedite decontamination, minimize rework, and expedite accurate instrument tray turnaround.
  • Provides assistance with material resources. Monitors inventory par levels, returns materials to stock, and promotes minimal waste of supplies.
  • Identifies and communicates problems and issues to appropriate personnel, such as service line coordinator/team lead, circulating nurse, or perioperative educator.
  • Supports and enforces infection-control policies and procedures.
  • Participates in orientation and in-service training for personnel.
  • Maintains a professional approach with confidentiality.
  • Is prompt and efficient with minimal absences.
  • Cooperates with and maintains good rapport with nursing staff, medical staff, and other departments

Qualifications:

  • Completion of an appropriate surgical technology program or previous surgical technologist experience of at least two (2) years.
  • High School graduate or GED certificate recipient
  • Previous Main OR experience as surgical technologist preferred
  • Experience in Orthopedics would be optimal

Required Certifications:

  • Current certification as a Surgical Technologist from an accredited program preferred
  • Current BCLS certification
